The Ring takes its name from the glowing shell of ionized gas expanding away from the star in the imageΓÇÖs center. The star is dying, and the bright spot is its exposed central core. The outer layers have been blown away; the bluish star that remains will cool until it becomes a white dwarf, and then a black dwarf. Eventually, our Sun will die the same death, although not for a few billion years.
